On the morning of May 23, a 28-year-old unarmed Maurice Gordon was shot 6 times and killed by a white New Jersey state trooper Sgt Randall Wetzel during a traffic stop on the Garden State Parkway in Bass River.
After having trouble with his car, Gordon, who had been stopped for allegedly speeding, opts to sit in the back of the police car as he awaits a tow truck. But it isn’t until he wants to leave the cruiser, the trooper shoots him six times. Sgt Wetzel then immediately handcuffs a bleeding Maurice to the ground without giving any first aid or providing any words of comfort.
Since the death of Maurice, the Attorney General has failed to properly address what happened and did not allow the family to come to terms with viewing the footage of their loved one and instead released the death of Maurice to all media outlets.
The New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal has released a redacted and edited version of the police dash cam video of the officer shooting Maurice.
Wetzel has been placed on administrative paid leave, and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said that a grand jury would investigate Gordon’s death to determine if Wetzel should face criminal charges. It's shocking that after committing a murder the officer is still bein paid and face no consequences whilst Maurice's life has been ended.
We believe the Attorney General will not provide a fair and transparent jury trial as he continues to withhold evidence of the autopsy and has released edited versions of the video. The family’s lawyer, has requested an independent prosecutor for when the case goes before a grand jury.
